Things to do.

Houston rewards the curious. There's the obvious tourist circuit — Space Center, MFAH, the Astros — but the city's real character lives in the bayou trails, the strip-mall restaurants, and a quietly enormous concentration of free cultural institutions.

01

Iconic Houston

The things you'd be wrong to skip on a first visit.

Space Center Houston

The official visitor center for NASA's Johnson Space Center. Half a day minimum. Book online to skip lines.

Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (MFAH)

Tenth largest art museum in the U.S. The Glassell Collection of African Gold alone is worth a visit.

The Menil Collection

Free. One of the best small museum experiences in America. Don't skip Rothko Chapel next door.

Houston Museum of Natural Science

Particularly strong in dinosaur halls, gem and mineral collection, and the Burke Baker Planetarium.

02

Outdoors & green spaces

Yes, Houston is hot. No, the city isn't a concrete grid — it has the largest urban park system in the country.

Buffalo Bayou Park

160 acres of trails along the bayou into downtown. Rent kayaks, see the Waugh Bridge bat colony at dusk.

Memorial Park

Larger than Central Park. Trails, an arboretum, an eastern land bridge, and the city's best running loops.

Hermann Park

Adjacent to the Museum District. Japanese Garden, a lake with paddle boats, free outdoor theater in summer.

Discovery Green

12-acre downtown park with events, ice skating in winter, food trucks, free yoga.

03

Free or close to it

Houston quietly has more free major museums than almost any U.S. city.

The Menil Collection

Always free.

Rothko Chapel

Free meditation/contemplation space with fourteen Mark Rothko paintings.

Project Row Houses

Free. Black art and community arts complex in the Third Ward.

Asia Society Texas Center

Free on Thursdays. Beautiful Yoshio Taniguchi building, rotating exhibitions.

MFAH (Thursdays)

Free general admission on Thursdays — special exhibitions still ticketed.

04

With kids

Houston is one of the most family-friendly U.S. cities — many of the top experiences work for any age.

Children's Museum Houston

Consistently ranked top 1–2 children's museums in the country.

Houston Zoo

Inside Hermann Park. Walkable, well-shaded, strong African and Asian sections.

Kemah Boardwalk

30 minutes south on Galveston Bay. Rides, restaurants, an aquarium. Day-trip energy.

Downtown Aquarium

Indoor, white-tablecloth restaurant included. A reliable hot-day plan.

05

Sports & events

Three major-league teams, plus a few specifically Houston traditions.

Houston Astros (MLB)

Minute Maid Park has a roof — useful in summer. Season runs April–September.

Houston Rockets (NBA)

Toyota Center, downtown. Season October–April.

Houston Texans (NFL)

NRG Stadium. Sundays in fall.

Houston Dynamo & Dash (MLS / NWSL)

Shell Energy Stadium, downtown. Quietly excellent atmosphere.

Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo

Annually late February through March. The largest livestock show and rodeo in the world.

06

Hidden / locals' favorites

The things first-time visitors miss.

The Beer Can House

A house entirely covered in beer cans. Folk art masterpiece. Open weekends.

Smither Park

Mosaic public art park next to the Orange Show. Free, wildly photographable.

The downtown tunnel system

7 miles of underground walkways with food courts. Only open weekdays, but uniquely Houston.

Waugh Drive Bat Colony

Around 250,000 Mexican free-tailed bats fly out from under the bridge at sunset, year-round.

Cidercade

300+ arcade games, $10 entry, all you can play. A favorite for groups.
